THEY HATCH THE EGGS OF VIPERS AND SPIN A SPIDER’S WEB.
Question: What does Isaiah 59:5 mean?
Isaiah 59:5;
“They hatch cockatrice’ eggs, and weave the spider’s web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper.”
ANSWER: This verse describes the nature of evil people.
The author says,”they hatch the eggs of vipers”. Vipers are a type of venomous snakes in the family Viperidae.When one sees them,he must kill them.Likewise,if a person comes across their eggs,he must crush them.Or else they might bring great harm if left unbroken.(The eggs will eventually hatch vipers.)
But the Bible says that an evil person does the opposite.He leaves the eggs to hatch.This means that an evil person may see danger coming upon others but does nothing to prevent it from happening to them.Instead,he gladly embraces it.
A good example of such people are the false prophets.They know well the effects of sin.They also know that no one who is without holiness shall see God(Hebrews 12:14).They do not lead people off- course but tend to bring them near to God by preaching to them the things of the physical nature,eg., wealth, businesses, achieving earthly goals.,etc.They do so out of greed for money.Yet they do not warn people concerning the danger of sin nor do they preach to them the good news of salvation.Hence, people forget God.Eventually,they die in their sins and go to hell.
The author also says,” and spin a spider’s web.”Just like we know,a spider weaves a web in order to trap insects and feed on them.So do people who are evil by nature.They devise a snare for others to get entrapped in evil and come to ruin eventually.
For instance,when we pray or wish for the death of our enemies,it is just like a person who weaves a destructive web.The Lord Jesus asked us to pray for our haters and love our enemies.But is that we do? Not if we pray for evil to befall our adversaries and wishing for their death.
In short,this is a behavior where a person contrives evil against others and gloats over their downfall.
The Bible teaches us that if we do such things,God is displeased.He will therefore not defend us neither will he grant us justice when we ask of him.And as a result,the answers to our prayers will come exactly the opposite of what we expect.Where we hoped for good and light,there shall come evil and darkness.We learn this in the following verses:
Isaiah 59:6-9;
“Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.
Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.
The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.
Therefore is judgment far from us, neither doth justice overtake us: we wait for light, but behold obscurity; for brightness, but we walk in darkness.”
Let’s strive and be careful not be Satan’s vessels;devising evil upon others.
May the Lord help us.
